King Edward and Wallace Simpson

Prince Edward of Wales, direct line to the British throne, fell in love with an American divorcee', Wallis Simpson. After being crowned King of England, he abdicated publicly to marry the woman he loved. Edward's compulsive womanising and reckless behaviour during the 1920s and 1930s worried The then British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin.

He started a long lasting affair with twice divorced Wallis Simpson unfortunately Prince Edward became besotted with the woman and refused to give her up. Marriage was out of the question for the future King of England who was also head of the Church of England which was opposed to the remarriage of divorced people if their former spouses were still alive.

Edward knew that any attempt by him to marry Wallace Simpson would result in the Government resigning and a constitunal crisis would enshew. So he abdicated from the throne of England stating that he could not bear the duties of office without the woman he loved by his side.

Surely one of the greatest love stories of all time giving up the whole of the British Empire for one woman, Edward was one of the shortest-reigning monarchs in British and Commonwealth history. He was never crowned.
